Tension rose at the Social Democratic Party (SDP) national secretariat in Abuja on Thursday after armed security operatives surrounded the party headquarters.
The incident occurred shortly after former SDP presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo, completed his screening for the party’s 2027 presidential ticket.
Adebayo described the police presence as a siege and part of a coordinated plan to derail the SDP’s nomination process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He claimed the move was designed to frustrate his bid to clinch the party’s presidential ticket.
Addressing journalists after the incident, Adebayo directly accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of orchestrating the operation.
He alleged that the President was seeking to impose one-man rule in Nigeria by weakening opposition parties.
“President Tinubu the autocrat has sent his goons to invade the SDP National Secretariat a day after I completed my presidential primary election screening.
“Tinubu wants one-man rule in Nigeria. We will defeat him. It is cowardly and not presidential for the President to be afraid of competition,” Adebayo said.
The SDP chieftain also named James Faleke and Joash Amupitan as part of those he claimed were working to destabilise the party’s internal process and block his emergence as flag bearer.
Party insiders confirmed that Adebayo had visited the secretariat for his nomination screening before police officers arrived at the premises early Thursday.
The sudden presence of security operatives caused panic among party officials and supporters present.
As of press time, the Presidency, the Nigeria Police Force, James Faleke, and Joash Amupitan have not issued official statements regarding the allegations.
The incident signals an early flashpoint in Nigeria’s 2027 presidential race, with opposition figures already raising concerns over political interference and the neutrality of security agencies.
