Adebayo Clinches SDP Presidential Ticket for 2027, Warns Nigeria Risks Sliding Into ‘One-Man Rule’

Bauchi, Nigeria — Lawyer and former presidential hopeful Adewole Adebayo has secured the Social Democratic Party (SDP) ticket for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, following a unanimous endorsement at the party’s national convention in Bauchi on Saturday.

Adebayo ran unopposed. Delegates from all 36 states adopted him by consensus, alongside electing new members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).

In his acceptance speech, Adebayo painted a stark picture of Nigeria’s current challenges — economic hardship, rising insecurity, and what he described as a dangerous drift toward authoritarianism.
He said unemployment has left graduates jobless, while millions lack access to basic healthcare.

“Why would Nigerians be hiding from immigration in China when I have a country of my own? Why are countries calling me a criminal when I have a country of my own?” Adebayo asked the delegates.

The SDP national leader criticised political elites for seeking medical care abroad and buying property overseas while “Nigerian women still gave birth under trees” due to weak healthcare infrastructure.

He also alleged links between some government elements and criminal groups, questioning the back and forth between security agencies and terrorists.

Adebayo thanked Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed for hosting the convention despite what he called pressure from unnamed forces to disrupt it.

He hailed Mohammed as a true representative of democracy and a successor to the ideals of late political icon Aminu Kano.

Central to his speech was a warning about Nigeria’s democratic future.

Adebayo argued the country is not just facing a one-party state, but one-man rule, claiming even APC members suffer internal suppression because “one individual was determining major decisions within the party.”

“The theme of my speech today is: use your freedom while you still have it to give meaning to multiparty democracy.

“Nigeria needs political diversity and ideological competition among parties that remain loyal to the unity and progress of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.
