A Federal High Court in Lagos has convicted and sentenced three men to a combined 17 years in prison for unlawful possession and trafficking of 78 kilograms of cannabis sativa, commonly known as Indian hemp or marijuana.
Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke handed down the sentences on Wednesday after the defendants pleaded guilty to separate charges filed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.
The convicted individuals are 59-year-old Sulaiman Olabiyi, 57-year-old Olumuyiwa Kolawole, and 18-year-old Samod Adisa.
Sulaiman Olabiyi received a 5-year jail term for dealing in 10.5 kg of cannabis. He was arrested on March 5, 2026, at Ali Street, Lagos Island.
Olumuyiwa Kolawole and Samod Adisa were each sentenced to 6 years for jointly dealing in 67.5 kg of the drug. The duo was apprehended on March 18, 2025, in Mushin, Lagos.
The NDLEA prosecutor, M. I. Erondu, told the court that their actions violated Section 11(c) of the NDLEA Act Cap N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
During sentencing, defence counsels, Chief Lilian Omotunde and Bolanle Kolawole pleaded for leniency, noting that the convicts were first-time offenders who did not waste the court's time.
Justice Aneke subsequently offered an option of a fine alongside community service.
Sulaiman Olabiyi was ordered to pay N3.5 million, while Olumuyiwa Kolawole and Samod Adisa were each fined N5 million in place of imprisonment.
All three were also mandated to complete 100 hours of community service.
The case was heard under charges FHC/L/239c/26 and FH/L/270c/26.
