US Calls on Iran to Halt Attacks on Israel Amid Escalating Violence

On Saturday, the United States urged Iran to stop its attacks on Israel, emphasizing the need to end the ongoing cycle of violence as Israel launched strikes against the Islamic Republic in response to a recent missile barrage.

“We urge Iran to cease its attacks on Israel so that this cycle of fighting can end without further escalation,” said Sean Savett, a spokesperson for the US National Security Council, in a statement to reporters.

In response to the Iranian assault, the Israeli military targeted military bases, missile sites, and other strategic systems in several regions of Iran, carefully avoiding populated areas to limit civilian casualties.

“Their response was an exercise in self-defence, focused solely on military targets, unlike Iran's assault, which targeted Israel’s most populous city,” Savett added.

Savett clarified that the United States did not participate in the operation, reaffirming its commitment to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East through diplomatic efforts.

A senior administration official indicated that President Joe Biden and his national security team have been working closely with Israel to ensure a measured response that minimizes civilian harm. “And that appears to have been precisely what transpired this evening,” the official stated.

President Biden has also encouraged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to develop a response aimed at deterring further aggression without provoking escalation, which remains the administration's primary goal.
