The Dangote Group has announced a major strategic expansion of its fertiliser operations across Africa, backed by a series of high-level technical partnerships with world-class engineering firms.
This ambitious project aims to significantly enhance regional food security and position Africa as a key player in the global fertiliser market.
The cornerstone of the expansion is the plan to triple Nigeria’s current urea production capacity from three million metric tons to nine million metric tons annually.
This will be achieved by adding four new production trains to the existing Lekki facility, bringing the total number of trains to six.
This dramatic increase is designed to meet the rising demand for high-quality fertiliser both within Africa and in international markets.
Simultaneously, the Group is moving forward with its continental growth strategy, highlighted by the recent groundbreaking of a $2.5 billion fertiliser plant in Gode, Ethiopia.
The new facility is engineered to produce three million metric tons of urea annually, marking a significant investment in strengthening food security and industrial growth across the Horn of Africa.
To ensure the new facilities meet the highest global standards for technology, reliability, and operational efficiency, Dangote Group has entered into agreements with leading industry experts, such as Topsoe, which would provide the ammonia technology licensing and process design packages for a total of six ammonia plants, four in Nigeria and two in Ethiopia.
Topsoe is globally renowned for its advanced and environmentally responsible ammonia process technologies.
For Saipem, it has been contracted to deliver the technology licensing and full process design package for the urea melt units across all six new plants, leveraging its deep engineering expertise in fertiliser production systems.
On its part, Thyssenkrupp (UFT), will supply the granulation technology license and complete process design package for the granulation units. This technology will be crucial for producing premium-quality urea granules suitable for both domestic and global export markets.
Engineers India Limited (EIL) has been appointed as the project management and engineering procurement and construction management consultant for the four new plants at the Dangote Fertiliser Free Zone Enterprise (DFFZE) in Lekki, Nigeria, bringing proven competence in large-scale industrial project delivery.
The planned expansion reflects the Dangote Group’s core commitment to building resilient industrial capacity.
