•Says Nigeria Descending into Chaos
The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Dr Alfred Adewale Martins, has issued a warning to the Federal Government, asserting that the nation is rapidly descending into chaos due to the alarming and persistent surge in terrorist attacks and abductions across the country.
The Archbishop, who called for more urgent official measures to restore security, stated that the mass killings of innocent Nigerians and the festering terrorism underline the necessity for the Federal Government and security agencies to, as a matter of urgency, identify and deal decisively with the terrorists and their sponsors.
Archbishop Martins specifically lamented the recent spate of attacks that targeted educational and religious institutions.
He drew attention to the predawn raid on Monday, November 17, 2025, at the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, where 25 schoolgirls were violently abducted from their dormitory.
This was followed closely by a similar incident on Friday, November 21, 2025, at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri, Niger State, where other students were also taken.
These mass abductions, the Archbishop noted with profound concern, are tragically "reminiscent of the abduction of the Chibok girls in April 2014, which still stirs the nation to the core."
Adding to the catalogue of recent atrocities, he condemned the kidnapping of Catholic priest, Father Bobbo Paschal, from St. Stephen Catholic Church in Kushe Gudgu, Kaduna State.
The raid was particularly bloody, resulting in the murder of Gideon Markus, the brother of a local priest, who attempted to intervene.
These attacks, Archbishop Martins said, "demonstrate the brazen audacity of those who seek to terrorise our nation."
The cleric expressed alarm over the recent spike in violence, which he believes indicates a deliberate effort by certain elements to destabilise the country.
He highlighted the brutal nature of the Kebbi attack, which saw the murder of the school’s Vice Principal and Chief Security Officer, Hassan Yakubu Makuku, who was shot after assailants scaled the school fence and exchanged gunfire with police.
"It is sad that these children, aged approximately 12 to 17, were seized under the cover of darkness," he remarked, though he expressed relief that one student managed to escape and return home.
He remains deeply troubled about the 24 girls who remain in captivity. Further pointing to the deteriorating security situation, the Archbishop cited the recent killing of Muhammad Uba, a General in the army, and the gruesome attack on worshippers at a Church in Eruku, Kwara State.
"If the terrorists can kill a whole serving army general in such a brazen manner, I wonder how secure the average citizens of this country are?" he challenged, stressing that "more needs to be done to secure the lives and properties of our citizens."
While acknowledging the military’s assurances of readiness, he questioned why they continue to appear powerless in the face of the incessant attacks.
Archbishop Martins warned that time was ticking fast and called on the Tinubu-led administration to, as a constitutional duty, bring home all those who are in the hands of these brazen terrorists.
He concluded by urging the entire political class to unite and support the security agencies in their efforts to defeat the terrorists, insisting that "no stone should be left unturned to bring the culprits and their sponsors to justice" and regain the confidence of citizens.
