Finnish Court Jails Pro-Biafra Agitator, Simon Ekpa for Terrorism Offences

A Finnish district court has sentenced Simon Ekpa, a prominent pro-Biafra separatist, to six years in prison for terrorism offences.

The verdict, delivered on Monday by the Päijät-Häme District Court, found Ekpa guilty of inciting terrorism and participating in a terrorist group.

According to a report by the Finnish newspaper Yle, the court determined that Ekpa leveraged his large social media following to incite violence in southeastern Nigeria from August 2021 to November 2024.

The three-judge panel unanimously ruled that Ekpa was an influential member of a militant separatist movement working to achieve the secession of a Biafran state from Nigeria.

The court's verdict also stated that Ekpa supplied these groups with weapons, explosives, and ammunition, and encouraged his followers on the social media platform X to commit crimes in Nigeria.

He was also convicted of aggravated tax fraud. Ekpa, who has lived in Lahti since 2007 and once served as a local councillor, reportedly committed the crimes in Finland, giving the Finnish court jurisdiction.

Although he denied all charges, the court found him guilty.
