Falana, Falz Defamation Suit: Court to Address Jurisdictional Challenge February 19

The Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, presided over by Justice Matthias Dawodu, has set February 19, 2025, to hear a preliminary objection filed by social media influencer, Martins Otse, popularly known as Verydarkman, in response to a defamation suit brought against him by prominent human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), and his son, celebrated musician Folarin Falana (Falz).

The Falanas are seeking N500 million each in damages for alleged defamatory claims made by Verydarkman in a viral video.

In the video, the influencer accused them of accepting N10 million from Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, to pervert justice.

The Falanas described the allegations as baseless, false, and malicious, asserting that the publication was designed to tarnish their reputations.

Justice Dawodu had previously, on October 14, 2024, ordered the removal of the video and prohibited the defendant from making further defamatory publications pending the outcome of the case.

During the latest hearing, Verydarkman’s lawyer, Marvin Omorogbe, sought additional time to respond to a counter-affidavit filed by the plaintiffs.

The plaintiffs’ counsel, Omotade Omotunbosun, did not oppose the request, prompting Justice Dawodu to adjourn proceedings.

Omorogbe also argued that the Lagos court lacks jurisdiction over the case, claiming that the alleged defamatory statements originated in Abuja, where the defendant resides and conducts his activities.

He accused the plaintiffs of "forum shopping" to secure a favourable outcome.

The Falanas, however, insist that the defendant’s publication was reckless and unverified, causing significant harm to their public image.

They are also demanding a public apology across all the defendant’s social media platforms and a national newspaper, alongside an injunction to prevent further defamatory statements.
