Over 15 years of collective action took the spotlight at Access UK Polo Day in London on July 6, 2026, as Access Bank UK, Fifth Chukker, UNICEF, and the Kaduna State Government renewed their joint commitment to expand quality education for underserved children in Northern Nigeria.
What started as an initiative to support 100 children has grown into one of Africa’s most impactful education programs. The Access Bank Fifth Chukker School in Kaduna State, alongside related interventions, has now reached more than 14,000 children across underserved communities.
Between 2018 and 2026, the school graduated 2,538 pupils, with girls making up over 54%, a strong step for inclusive education and girls’ empowerment.
Each year, more than 1,000 pupils access its internationally recognised foundational learning program, driving a 15% rise in literacy and numeracy performance.
Graduates continue to gain admission into top secondary schools, while teachers benefit from ongoing professional development and digital learning tools.
Speaking at the event, Access Bank Plc MD/CEO, Roosevelt Ogbonna said, “What began as a dream to transform the lives of 100 children has grown into a movement that has positively impacted more than 14,000 young people. We want to return next year talking about 28,000 children.”
Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani reaffirmed the state’s reforms, noting that 300,000 out-of-school children were re-enrolled in the past year through partnerships with UNICEF and others.
He announced plans to build 120 additional classrooms at the Fifth Chukker Access Bank UNICEF School to expand access further.
The governor said, “By giving children access to quality education, we are empowering them to dream, to lead and to build a better future.”
He also honoured the late Herbert Wigwe for his vision in driving educational access.
Access Holdings Chairman, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede emphasised the impact on infrastructure, stating that, “The most meaningful measure of success is not the number of buildings we construct, but the opportunities we create.”
Access Bank UK CEO, Jamie Simmonds called the event “polo with purpose,” highlighting the bank’s focus on sustainable social impact through education.
