High-ranking diplomats and international legal scholars have reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to fostering a robust international legal order that supports sustainable prosperity through inclusive and equitable trade.
The announcement came during the high-level opening ceremony of the inaugural Africa Policy Dialogue, hosted alongside the 82nd Biennial Conference of the International Law Association (ILA) in Vienna.
Since its founding in 1873, the ILA conference has served as a premier global gathering for legal minds, diplomats, and policymakers.
This year’s dialogue, convened by the ILA Nigerian Branch in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Justice, Aluko & Oyebode, and the Nigerian Embassy in Vienna, provided a dedicated platform to advance Africa's strategic interests on the world stage.
Under the theme ‘Peace, Prosperity and the Future of International Law: Geopolitics and Geoeconomics in a Fragmenting World,’ the opening session featured powerful addresses from key Nigerian figures.
Her Excellency Dr (Mrs) Florence Ajimobi, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Austria, underscored the administration's dedication to the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda.’
She highlighted the critical role of diplomatic engagement in securing foreign collaborations that drive economic growth and social justice.
Delivering a goodwill message, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, painted a clear picture of the global landscape, characterised by climate disruption, AI advancements, and geopolitical tensions.
He emphasised that legal infrastructure remains the bedrock of global commerce.
“Capital flows where legal certainty exists. We must rededicate ourselves to Law for Peace, Law for Prosperity, and Law for the People. Nigeria stands ready to collaborate in building an international legal order that is equitable, resilient, and fit for the future,” Fagbemi stated.
Professor Damilola Olawuyi, SAN, President of ILA Nigeria and UNESCO Chair on Environmental Law, stressed Nigeria’s unique leadership role as Africa’s largest economy.
He noted that attracting sustainable international finance depends heavily on homegrown experts with the skills to negotiate win-win trade and investment.
“ILA Nigeria is ready to help,” Olawuyi affirmed, pointing to the vast pool of distinguished international law practitioners within the organisation ready to support the government’s strategic diplomatic efforts.
Tunde Fagbohunlu, SAN, Senior Partner at Aluko & Oyebode, reinforced the business case for legal stability.
“In an era of geopolitical fragmentation, legal certainty has become a strategic economic asset. Businesses depend on stable frameworks to manage risk and make long-term decisions. This dialogue is essential for strengthening the rule of law and advancing Africa’s global competitiveness,” he said.
The panel discussions that followed featured a roster of experts including Mrs Patience Okala (AfCFTA Coordination Office), Mr Olivier Pognon (African Legal Support Facility), and Professor Marie-Claire Cordonnier Segger (University of Cambridge).
The sessions explored Africa's strategic priorities amidst shifting geoeconomic realities, focusing on how international law can serve as a tool for justice, integration, and inclusive development.
