A disturbing video circulating on social media has sparked widespread outrage after it showed a senior army officer, identified as a Major General, and two soldiers physically assaulting a man in the Abuja metropolis.
The incident, which allegedly occurred after the man overtook the military vehicle, has led to calls for accountability and an investigation into the actions of the army personnel involved.
The 1:57-minute video, which was initially shared on various social media platforms, shows the man groaning in pain while being brutally beaten by the soldiers.
In the footage, the man repeatedly exclaims, “How did I pass your car! How did I pass your car! Oh my God!” as the soldiers continue to assault him.
Despite his obvious distress, the soldiers do not relent, intensifying their violence.
In the background, a woman’s voice is heard shouting, “He is not feeling fine! He’s not feeling fine! Jesus, Jesus, Jesus!” attempting to intervene and draw attention to the man's condition.
However, the situation escalated further when the soldiers turned their aggression toward the female passenger, who had been recording the confrontation.
One of the soldiers is heard demanding, “Give me the phone! Give me the phone.” as they attempt to seize her device.
The video has since gone viral, triggering widespread condemnation on social media, with many Nigerians expressing outrage over the excessive use of force by the military personnel.
Reports indicate that the man, whose identity has not been confirmed, is now suing the soldiers involved in the incident, seeking compensation of N150 million and calling for the dismissal of the Major General.
In response to the viral video and public outcry, the Acting Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, ordered an immediate investigation into the incident.
A statement issued by the Nigerian Army’s Director of Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, confirmed the investigation and emphasized the Army's commitment to upholding the rule of law.
“The attention of the Nigerian Army (NA) has been drawn to a viral audio-visual recording circulating on social media platforms, purportedly showing a senior Army officer and two other soldiers in an altercation with a man and woman within the Abuja metropolis,” the statement read.
While the exact circumstances leading to the incident remain unclear, the Army assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted to determine the facts surrounding the altercation.
The statement further reiterated the Nigerian Army’s commitment to serving and protecting law-abiding citizens, as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The investigation has garnered significant public attention, with many calling for justice for the victim and demanding that the army personnel involved face appropriate disciplinary actions.
The Nigerian public has also expressed concern about the increasing reports of military abuse and the need for greater accountability within the security forces.
As of now, the Army has urged the public to allow due process to take its course, promising that a logical conclusion will be reached once the investigation is complete.
