In a landmark cross-border operation, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has successfully extradited two Nigerian nationals to the United States to face trial for their alleged roles in a sextortion ring that led to the tragic deaths of two American teenagers.
The suspects, Mudashiru Afeez Olawale and Adebola Festus Adekunle, were handed over to U.S. authorities on Wednesday following separate investigations by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
The duo is accused of orchestrating online sexual extortion schemes targeting male minors aged 13 to 17, using graphic Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) to coerce victims into sending money via remitters, gift cards, and cryptocurrency.
According to the FBI, both cases culminated in unimaginable heartbreak. In one instance, a 13-year-old boy died by suicide after being threatened by a suspect who demanded money following an exchange of nude photographs on Instagram.
Investigators revealed that the harassment continued even after the minor communicated his intent to take his life.
In a parallel case, Olawale faces a seven-count indictment in the U.S., including charges of sexual exploitation of a minor resulting in death, enticement, and distribution of child pornography.
The EFCC’s Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 played a pivotal role in the investigation, acting on actionable intelligence provided by the FBI.
While Adekunle was arrested and processed for extradition without incident, Olawale’s legal battle was more complex.
His extradition was initially denied by a Federal High Court in Lagos on June 10, 2024. However, the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, overturned that ruling on July 7, 2026, clearing the final hurdle for his transfer to the U.S.
According to the EFCC, “This operation sends a clear message that cybercriminals have no haven. We will continue to work with our international partners to ensure that justice is served for victims and their families.”
