Nigerian Government Demands Justice for Businessman Detained in South Africa Since 2019

ABDUL OLATUNJI

The Federal Government of Nigeria has intensified efforts to secure justice for Abdul Olatunji, a Nigerian businessman reportedly held in South Africa since 2019 without trial.

This development comes after a petition by the human rights group Zarephath Aide and mounting appeals from Olatunji’s family and advocates.

Olatunji’s prolonged detention has drawn widespread criticism, prompting his family to seek assistance from Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM).

In response, NiDCOM has taken decisive action, urging South African authorities to clarify the circumstances of Olatunji’s detention.

Abdur-Rahman Balogun, NiDCOM’s Director of Media and Public Relations, confirmed that the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa is actively investigating the matter.

“Efforts are underway to ensure justice for Mr Olatunji. The Nigerian Mission in South Africa is working closely with local authorities to resolve this issue,” Balogun stated.

Additionally, Elizabeth Johnson, President of the Nigerian Women’s Association South Africa, is arranging a prison visit to provide support for Olatunji.

NiDCOM Chair Abike Dabiri-Erewa has reassured Olatunji’s family of the government’s commitment to resolving the case.

The family had accused South African authorities of detaining Olatunji on fabricated charges, alleging a conspiracy by certain officials.

This promptly made the Nigerian government make a pledge to a thorough investigation to ensure justice and fairness for the detained businessman.
