In a significant move mirroring the Senate's position, the House of Representatives has invoked constitutional provisions to demand the removal of Umar Danladi, Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The decision was based on Paragraph 17(3), Part 1, Fifth Schedule of the Constitution, and Section 22(3) of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act.
Hon. Julius Ihonvbere, who sponsored the motion, highlighted that these provisions mandate the President to act on an address supported by a two-thirds majority in both the Senate and the House of Representatives to remove the CCT Chairman for misconduct.
Central to the allegations against Danladi was his involvement in a public altercation with a security guard at Banex Plaza Shopping Complex in Abuja.
The incident, widely circulated in the media, prompted the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions to summon him.
While Danladi initially appeared before the committee and admitted to his involvement, he later failed to attend subsequent hearings, effectively stalling the committee’s investigations.
Lawmakers expressed disappointment in Danladi’s conduct, emphasizing that his actions fell short of the ethical standards expected of the head of such a critical statutory body.
“The Code of Conduct Tribunal is a cornerstone of our judicial integrity. Its leadership must embody moral rectitude, integrity, and accountability.
“Unfortunately, the Chairman’s actions have undermined public confidence in the institution,” the House declared in a statement.
With the House and Senate now aligned, the constitutional process moves to the next stage, requiring a presidential address to finalize the decision.
