Former Lawmaker Farouk Lawan Released from Prison After Serving Sentence

Farouk Lawan, a former member of the House of Representatives, has been released from the Kuje Custodial Centre after completing his prison term, as confirmed by Adamu Duza, spokesman for the Federal Capital Territory Command of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS).

Lawan expressed immense gratitude upon his release, stating, “Today marks the beginning of a new chapter in my life. I thank Almighty Allah for seeing me through this trial.”

He emphasized his appreciation for the support from family and friends during his challenging times.

Before his legal troubles, Lawan was a prominent figure in the National Assembly and played a key role in the election of several House Speakers.

A member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he was elected to the Lower Chambers four times and served as chairman of the “Integrity Group,” which led to the impeachment of former Speaker Patricia Etteh.

Lawan's downfall began with accusations stemming from the fuel subsidy scandal, where he was alleged to have solicited bribes from businessman Femi Otedola.

He was convicted in 2021 on charges of accepting a $500,000 bribe related to the petrol subsidy scam.

Initially sentenced to seven years, his term was later reduced to five years by the appellate court, a decision upheld by the Supreme Court in January 2024.

Lawan represented the Bagwai/Shanono constituency in Kano State during his tenure in the House of Representatives.
