In a significant endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) initiative, Dangote Cement Plc has invested over $280 million to establish Nigeria's largest fleet of CNG-powered trucks and infrastructure.
This ambitious investment underscores the company’s commitment to fostering cheaper and cleaner fuel alternatives while supporting Nigeria’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
The CNG initiative, led by President Tinubu, aims to create affordable and sustainable energy options across Nigeria.
It includes the distribution of 1 million free CNG conversion kits for commercial vehicles, facilitating a nationwide shift to cleaner fuels.
The President highlighted the importance of the initiative at a recent event, calling CNG-powered transportation an “economic necessity” for the nation.
“Utilizing natural gas to power Nigeria’s transportation industry is the next way to go,” President Tinubu remarked, advocating for policies that leverage Nigeria’s extensive natural gas resources.
Dangote Cement's commitment, totalling more than $280 million, aims to transition its entire truck fleet to CNG, marking a crucial step toward reducing carbon emissions.
This investment includes the procurement of 3,100 mono-fuel CNG trucks by year’s end, with a full fleet transition targeted for mid-2026.
The company is also expanding its CNG refuelling infrastructure, including a major station at Obajana, capable of refuelling over 3,000 trucks, with another station under development in Ibese.
Arvind Pathak, Group Managing Director of Dangote Cement, emphasized the importance of the company’s green transition.
“By mid-2026, Dangote Cement aims to operate a fleet predominantly powered by CNG,” Pathak stated.
He added that Dangote’s investment directly supports Nigeria’s energy goals and aligns with the global shift towards sustainability.
President and Chief Executive of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, underscored that this investment aligns with Nigeria's climate commitments under the Paris Agreement, targeting net-zero emissions by 2060.
“Our adoption of CNG is a testament to our support for President Tinubu’s energy vision under the Renewed Hope Agenda," he said, pledging that the group’s contributions would reinforce Nigeria’s journey toward energy security.
With this move, Dangote Cement now stands as Nigeria’s largest operator of CNG trucks, setting a high standard for the private sector's role in advancing sustainable energy practices.
