Wale Oyedeji’s Transition to FBN Holdings: A Testament to NOVA Bank Chairman Oduoza’s Vision

One of the most talked-about moves in Nigeria's banking sector is the appointment of Wale Oyedeji as Group Managing Director of FBN Holdings, Nigeria's oldest banking institution.

Oyedeji brings 30 years of experience to FBN Holdings, having served as CEO of NOVA Commercial Bank, a rising star in Nigeria's commercial banking space.

Under the strategic direction of NOVA Bank Chairman, Phillips Oduoza, the bank transitioned successfully from a merchant bank to a commercial entity, expanding its customer base and impact.

Oyedeji played a critical role in this transformation, supporting Oduoza’s ambition to build a robust financial institution serving high-net-worth clients and corporate entities with innovative banking solutions.

Industry insiders are abuzz with the significance of Oyedeji's “poaching” by FBN Holdings, interpreting it as a clear endorsement of NOVA Bank’s leadership quality and strategic vision.

“The fact that FBN Holdings, with its strong legacy, would look to NOVA Bank for talent speaks volumes about the high standards established under Oduoza’s leadership,” experts suggest.

In his new role at FBN Holdings, Oyedeji will helm the company’s next five-year strategic plan, emphasizing corporate governance and a focus on sustainable growth.

Meanwhile, NOVA Bank recently made headlines with its entry into retail and commercial banking via a pioneering “phygital” approach, blending physical branches with digital platforms to cater to customers everywhere — a strong start that, despite Oyedeji’s exit, is expected to continue on a solid trajectory.

Industry commentators note that Oyedeji’s departure won’t disrupt NOVA’s growth, as Oduoza’s guiding vision remains intact.

“While Oyedeji’s contributions have been significant, it’s Oduoza’s master plan that continues to shape the future of NOVA,” one observer stated.

Oyedeji’s extensive qualifications — a B.Sc. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan, an M.Sc. in Financial Economics from the University of London, and his executive experience at Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) UK — position him well for his role at FBN Holdings.

He succeeds Nnamdi Okonkwo as Group Managing Director.

NOVA Chairman Oduoza, a former Group Managing Director of United Bank for Africa (UBA) and a Harvard Business School alumnus has long been recognized for his industry-shaping insights and high-level expertise, having built a reputation as one of the sector’s foremost leaders.
