The Chairman of Odu'a Group of Companies, Otunba Bimbo Ashiru, has been announced as the keynote speaker for the highly anticipated 2024 Brands and Marketing Conference.
Scheduled for December 6, 2024, the conference will take place at the Oriental Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos, at 10 a.m.
The event is organized annually by the Brand Journalists Association of Nigeria (BJAN) and is a premier gathering for professionals and stakeholders across the Nigerian marketing and communications sectors.
This year’s theme, ‘Rebuilding Consumer Confidence: Addressing Policy Impact and Market Realities’, promises an in-depth look into the current economic and policy-induced challenges facing Nigeria.
Otunba Ashiru’s keynote presentation is expected to address pivotal issues affecting the industry, including the influence of government policies—such as interest rate adjustments, tax reforms, and subsidy removals—on consumer purchasing power and market dynamics.
His insights will set the stage for a rich panel discussion featuring a lineup of experts and analysts from the marketing sector, who will delve into his perspectives and examine adaptive strategies for brands navigating a shifting economic landscape.
Conference Goals: Tackling Economic Realities
BJAN Chairman, Clara Okoro, highlighted that this year’s conference aims to provide a platform for examining how recent policy changes are reshaping consumer spending and overall market health.
According to Okoro, “We would be exploring strategies for businesses to adapt to weakened consumer purchasing power and shifts in consumption patterns due to policy changes.
“We would be examining how brands can pivot their strategies to maintain relevance and profitability in an environment of economic pressure and policy-induced constraints.”
A Proven Track Record: Ashiru’s Impact on Ogun State’s Economic Landscape
Otunba Ashiru’s selection as the keynote speaker underscores his extensive experience and transformative influence in Nigeria’s commerce and industry sectors.
As a two-term Commissioner for Commerce and Industry in Ogun State from 2011 to 2018, Ashiru spearheaded economic initiatives that spurred unprecedented growth in the region.
Under his tenure, Ogun State’s internally generated revenue saw a staggering 1,279.84% increase, and the region attracted over 300 factories and companies, boosting its investment profile to N691.77 billion in 2014 — a significant rise from N377 billion in 2013.
This accomplishment was acknowledged by the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, which placed Ogun State at the top in terms of industrial investment in Nigeria.
His tenure also marked notable strides in making Ogun State a more business-friendly destination.
The World Bank Group’s ‘Doing Business in Nigeria 2014 Report’ ranked Ogun among the top five states for ease of doing business, a remarkable improvement from its 36th position in 2010.
Ashiru’s creation of a One-Stop-Shop Investment Center (OSSIC) was instrumental in simplifying the investment process, further solidifying Ogun State's appeal to foreign investors.
His achievements have been recognized through numerous awards, including Best Commissioner of the Year by Nigerian NewsDirect in 2015 and the FIBAN Excellence Award for Most Proactive Commissioner in 2013.
A Timely Address for Nigeria’s Brands and Businesses
Otunba Ashiru, who is also a respected figure in investment and strategic management, will bring his wealth of expertise to bear at the BJAN Conference, offering insights into how brands can navigate an era marked by economic shifts and policy-driven constraints.
