Nuclear Stand-off: Trump Hints at Military Strikes as Geneva Talks Stall Without Breakthrough

GENEVA / WASHINGTON — Tensions between Washington and Tehran reached a fever pitch on Wednesday, as the White House issued a stern warning following a second round of nuclear negotiations that failed to yield a significant breakthrough.

The diplomatic stalemate coincided with an announcement from Tehran and Moscow of joint naval exercises in the Sea of Oman, a move explicitly designed to deter unilateral action in the strategic waterway.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Wednesday that while a little bit of progress was made during indirect talks in Geneva, the two nations remain very far apart on core issues.

Leavitt's message to the Iranian leadership was blunt: “Iran would be very wise to make a deal with President Trump

“Diplomacy is always the President's first option, but we have been clear about the consequences of failure.”

The talks, mediated by Oman, seek to curb Iran's nuclear program following a year of escalating military friction, including previous US-backed strikes on Iranian facilities.

President Donald Trump, who has already deployed two aircraft carrier strike groups and thousands of troops to the Gulf, took to his Truth Social platform to escalate the rhetoric.

In a post targeting both the Iranian regime and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s recent Chagos Islands agreement, Trump suggested that the US might require full control of the Diego Garcia airbase to eradicate a potential attack by a highly unstable and dangerous Regime.

“DO NOT GIVE AWAY DIEGO GARCIA!” the President wrote, linking the strategic Indian Ocean base directly to the US mission of containing Tehran.

As Washington ramped up its rhetoric, Iran and Russia began mobilising for joint naval drills in the northern Indian Ocean and the Sea of Oman.

Rear Admiral Hassan Maghsadlou, a spokesperson for the drills, stated the exercises aim to promote security and counter activities threatening maritime safety.

The drills, which involve Russian corvettes and Iranian warships, are widely viewed as a strategic signal of defiance against the US military buildup.

This follows a highly unusual move by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard earlier this week to partially close the Strait of Hormuz for security reasons during independent exercises.

The current stand-off comes at a critical time for the Iranian economy, which remains under heavy sanctions pressure.

While Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi expressed a clearer path ahead for diplomacy, the White House’s refusal to set an explicit deadline, while simultaneously briefing the President on maximum damage military options, suggests the window for a peaceful resolution is rapidly closing.
