SEOUL — In a landmark ruling that has sent shockwaves through the nation, the Seoul Central District Court has sentenced former President Yoon Suk Yeol to life in prison for masterminding the short-lived, yet chaotic, martial law declaration of December 3, 2024.
The court designated Yoon as the leader of an insurrection, concluding that his attempt to suspend civil liberties and bypass democratic institutions constituted a direct assault on the constitutional order.
While prosecutors had initially sought the death penalty, the judges opted for the maximum term of life imprisonment.
The verdict didn’t stop at the Blue House. Several high-ranking officials who facilitated the decree were also convicted for their roles in enforcing the military takeover including Kim Yong Hyun (Former Defence Minister) who was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
Multiple officials received varying prison terms for their involvement in the mobilisation of troops and security forces during the crisis.
Yoon, 65, remained defiant throughout the proceedings. Having already been impeached and removed from office following the failed decree, the former leader has consistently maintained his innocence, arguing that his actions were a necessary measure for national security.
