Court Hands Five-Year Jail Terms to Serial Drug Dealers over Illicit Drug Export

The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has convicted and sentenced two serial drug dealers, Ezeh Alexander Uche and Smith David Korede, to five years imprisonment each for offences bordering on unlawful dealing and export of hard drugs.

Ezeh Alexander Uche was convicted by Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke on a four-count charge relating to dealing in cocaine and cannabis sativa, popularly known as marijuana.

In a related case, Smith David Korede was sentenced by Justice Deinde Dipeolu to a similar five-year jail term on a three-count charge of unlawful exportation of cocaine.

The convictions followed separate arraignments by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in cases marked FHC/L/30c/2025 and FHC/L/1132c/2025 respectively.

The defendants were prosecuted by Abu Ibrahim, counsel for the NDLEA.

While presenting the facts of the cases, the prosecutor told the court that the offences were committed at different times.

According to him, Ezeh Alexander Uche committed his offences on November 5, 2024, when he procured two couriers, Ekeocha Anayo Nelson and Olowolehin Sunday Olabode, to unlawfully export illicit drugs outside the country.

Abu informed Justice Aneke that the drugs consisted of 4.40 kilograms of cocaine and 11.50 kilograms of cannabis sativa.

He explained that the substances were cleverly concealed in foodstuffs and packs of plantain chips and prepared as cargo destined for the United Kingdom via Cologne, Germany.

In the case against Smith David Korede, the prosecutor told Justice Dipeolu that the convict used Deborah Tolutope of Covenant Perfect Delivery, located at No. 3 Arowojobe Street, Mafoluku, Oshodi, Lagos, to export cocaine illegally to the United Kingdom.

The drugs, he said, were hidden in items such as hair gel cream, hair attachments, clothing materials, dye and Aboniki analgesic balm.

The prosecutor stated that the offences contravened Sections 21(2)(d) and 20(1)(a) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, and are punishable under Section 11(b) of the same Act.

Both convicts pleaded guilty to the charges. Based on their pleas, the prosecution urged the court to convict and sentence them accordingly, citing relevant legal authorities.

However, the defence counsel, Emmanuel Uchenna Okenyin, pleaded for leniency, urging the court to consider their early guilty pleas and their claim of remorse.

Despite noting that the convicts had no previous records, the prosecutor maintained that they were masterminds of several drug export operations.

The judges subsequently sentenced them to five years' imprisonment each, with the terms to run concurrently and without an option of fine.
