Nigeria Needs Facts-Driven Storytelling, Minister Tells Advertising Practitioners

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has called for a new era of strategic communication to reshape global perceptions of Nigeria, urging marketing communication professionals to lead the charge.

Speaking on Wednesday at the fifth edition of the National Advertising Conference, held at the Continental Hotel in Abuja, Idris said the country must actively counter emerging false narratives, including claims that brand Nigeria as a violator of religious freedom.

He said the industry has a crucial national role that goes beyond brand messaging, emphasising that practitioners are custodians of the nation's perception and image.

According to him, the communication renaissance Nigeria needs is one driven by facts rather than fear, unity over division, and truth above propaganda.

He noted that when misleading stories about the country spread, particularly on international platforms, only well-crafted, creative, and truthful storytelling can effectively reshape the narrative.

“We must project Nigeria as it truly is: a diverse, dynamic, and resilient nation of hardworking people who coexist peacefully and aspire collectively,” the minister said.

He urged practitioners to deploy integrated campaigns, digital storytelling, strategic partnerships, and value-based branding to spotlight the country as a hub of opportunity, innovation, and creativity.

This year’s National Advertising Conference, themed ‘Marketing Communications: Transforming Businesses and Creating Growth in Challenging Times,’ convened industry players to discuss solutions for strengthening brand communication amid evolving global challenges.

In his remarks, Director-General of the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON), Dr Lekan Fadolapo, described the gathering as a convergence of strategists, creators, innovators, and storytellers committed to advancing the sector through shared insights and thought leadership.
