Lagos socialite Pretty Mike faces trial over alleged drug party at Proxy Night Club

Popular Lagos socialite and entertainer Mike Nwalie, better known as Pretty Mike, was arraigned on Thursday before the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, over alleged drug-related offences.

Nwalie, who owns Proxy Lagos Night Club, was arraigned alongside his club’s supervisor, Joachim Hillary, 32, by the Federal Government of Nigeria through the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The duo appeared before Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa on a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, possession, and permitting the use of the club for illegal drug activities.

The charge, dated October 30, 2025, arose from an NDLEA operation at Proxy Night Club, located at No. 7 Akin Adesola Street, Victoria Island, on October 26, 2025.

According to the prosecution, the NDLEA accused both defendants of conspiring to organise a drug party on the club premises.

During the subsequent raid, agents allegedly recovered 200 grams of Cannabis Sativa (Indian hemp) and 177 cylinders of Nitrous Oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, weighing a total of 364.662 kilograms.

The NDLEA described Nitrous Oxide as a harmful and abused substance, adding that the seized materials were consistent with the agency’s findings of drug abuse among young Nigerians in nightlife spaces.

In the first count, both defendants were accused of conspiring to use the club for drug-related activities, an offence punishable under Section 14(b) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

The second count was levelled solely against Hillary, alleging that he unlawfully possessed 200 grams of Cannabis Sativa on or about October 25, 2025, in violation of Sections 20(1)(c) and 20(2)(b) of the Act.

The third count targeted Pretty Mike as the proprietor and occupier of the nightclub, accusing him of allowing the premises to be used for drug dealing and consumption, contrary to Section 12 of the same Act.

Both defendants pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Following their plea, NDLEA counsel Buhari Abdullahi requested a date for trial. However, defence counsel Dr B.S. Awosika (SAN) applied for bail on behalf of his clients, urging the court to grant bail on liberal terms, noting that the defendants had no prior criminal record and were ready to cooperate fully with the court.

Opposing the motion, Abdullahi argued that the defence had not provided sufficient material to justify bail and urged the court to instead grant an accelerated hearing.

In his ruling, Justice Lewis-Allagoa held that the prosecution failed to show compelling reasons to deny bail, emphasising that the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

He granted each defendant ₦50 million bail, with two responsible sureties in like sum. The sureties are to swear an affidavit of means, while the defendants shall remain in the custody of their counsel pending compliance with the bail conditions.

The court adjourned the matter to January 14, 2026, for the commencement of the trial.
