The United States Consulate in Lagos and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have lauded the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for its effectiveness in investigating sextortion and transnational financial crimes.
The commendation came during a July 6, 2026 courtesy visit to the EFCC’s Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 in Ikoyi.
Assistant Law Enforcement Attaché SSA James Smith and SSA Thomas Pepper of the FBI’s Cyber Division met with Acting Zonal Director, Assistant Commander of the EFCC ACE I Bawa Usman Kaltungo.
Smith said the visit aimed to deepen collaboration, especially on information sharing to combat sextortion, cybercrime, and other cross-border offences involving Nigerians and foreign nationals.
Pepper noted the agencies already have a robust collaboration but called for improved timeliness and efficiency in sharing investigative information.
He described sextortion as a priority issue in the United States and proposed a joint team to facilitate intelligence gathering on cases reported to the EFCC and requests made to the FBI. He added that the FBI is working to obtain additional identifiers to share with the Commission.
Responding, Kaltungo assured the delegation of the EFCC’s cooperation and open-door policy with international partners.
He stressed that access to tracking tools would help the Commission apprehend perpetrators faster. He also pledged to expedite investigations into cases presented by the FBI.
Head of Investigations, ACE II Moses Oguzi, requested a clear framework for the proposed joint operation and clarification on whether it would cover only computer-related fraud or extend to other financial crimes, citing rising visa fraud cases.
Smith confirmed that the FBI would provide a list of cases and share targeted information aligned with agreed areas of interest to avoid overwhelming the EFCC with unnecessary data.
