Dangote Cement Leads Africa’s Green Revolution with ₦12.4bn Sustainability Drive, 100% CNG Fleet Plan

In a bold push to drive Africa’s transition toward a low-carbon economy, Dangote Cement Plc has announced major strides in its sustainability journey, including plans to operate a fully compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered truck fleet in Nigeria by 2026, a move expected to cut carbon emissions by 29 per cent per energy unit consumed.

Speaking at the just-concluded 14th Africa CemTrade Summit held at the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra, Ghana, the company’s Group Managing Director, Mr Arvind Pathak, revealed that Dangote Cement has already co-processed over 1.5 million tonnes of alternative fuels in the past four years as part of its energy diversification strategy.

This initiative, he said, underscores the company’s commitment to sustainability, energy efficiency, and reducing its environmental footprint across Africa.

“Sustainability has never been an afterthought for us; it is central to how we grow, innovate, and operate.

“Our investments in cleaner fuels, process optimisation, and digital transformation are helping us reduce waste and emissions while strengthening competitiveness,” Pathak stated.

Since 2021, Dangote Cement has successfully deployed 15 alternative fuel systems across its operations in sub-Saharan Africa, achieving up to 40 per cent thermal substitution rates in some plants, notably in Senegal, Zambia, and South Africa.

The alternative fuel mix converts industrial, agricultural, and municipal waste into energy, aligning with the company’s broader target of reducing carbon emissions by 20 per cent by 2030.

Central to Dangote Cement’s green strategy is its ongoing transition to CNG logistics. So far, the company has deployed over 3,000 CNG trucks and 1,000 dual-fuel vehicles, significantly cutting transport-related emissions and operating expenses.

The goal, Pathak noted, is to achieve a 100 per cent CNG-powered logistics fleet in Nigeria by 2026, setting a new sustainability benchmark for the African manufacturing sector.

Beyond fuel diversification, Dangote Cement is also embracing technology to enhance transparency, accountability, and supply chain efficiency.

Through its Distributor Management System (DMS), Transport Management System (TMS), and Electronic Proof of Delivery (e-POD) tools, the company has digitised its logistics operations, improving route optimisation and reducing energy waste.

The company has already mapped over 65,000 retail outlets in Nigeria and continues to expand its digital infrastructure across regional trade corridors.

Complementing these efforts is the Customer Truck Empowerment Scheme (CTES), under which more than 4,000 trucks have been distributed to transport partners, generating employment and improving delivery reliability.

Dangote Cement’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond its operations into the communities where it operates. In 2024 alone, the company invested ₦12.4 billion in social and infrastructural development projects across its host countries, a fourfold increase from the previous year.

These initiatives cover education, healthcare, road construction, and youth empowerment, reinforcing the company’s philosophy of inclusive and responsible growth.

Pathak emphasised that sustainability is now a driver of profitability for modern businesses:

“For Africa’s industrial future to remain viable, sustainability must make economic sense. Our strategy ensures profitability while protecting the planet,” he said.

Over the last two decades, Dangote Cement has grown from a local producer into Africa’s largest cement manufacturer, operating in 11 countries with a total production capacity of 55 million tonnes per annum.

Beyond scale, the company’s distinction lies in its deliberate transition toward low-carbon operations, integrating green technologies and energy efficiency into every stage of its value chain.

Pathak noted that Dangote Cement’s participation in global sustainability partnerships further strengthens its leadership position.

The company is a founding member of the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) and partners with the United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG Africa) to promote the adoption of low-carbon cement standards, including the emerging Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3) technology.

Speaking at the summit, Mrs Oyekemi Oyelola, Dangote Cement’s Deputy Head of Sustainability, reaffirmed the company’s long-term vision to make Africa’s cement industry a global model for green industrialisation.

“We see a future where Africa’s cement industry becomes a benchmark for sustainable industrialisation globally.

“Our mission is to ensure Dangote Cement leads that transformation, driving innovation, creating value, and helping Africa build not only stronger structures but a stronger, greener future,” Oyelola said.

With its aggressive push into CNG-powered logistics, waste-to-energy initiatives, and massive community investment, Dangote Cement continues to demonstrate that environmental stewardship and industrial success can go hand in hand. Its model of sustainable manufacturing is fast becoming a blueprint for African businesses striving to balance growth with climate responsibility.
