A Lagos-based estate developer, ALADI Samsideen Akanni Sule, has dragged two members of the Abolarinwa family and a senior police officer before the Ikeja Judicial Division of the Lagos State High Court over alleged defamation, harassment and malicious publication.
Sule, who operates under the business name SAS Estate Developer, filed the suit through his lawyer, Dele Babalola, accusing the defendants of circulating false and damaging allegations capable of destroying his reputation and business standing.
The defendants in the suit are Alhaja Sherifat Tejumola Abolarinwa, Mr Habeeb Tejumola Abolarinwa and CSP Taofeek Tijani of the Zone II Police Command, Onikan, Lagos.
According to court documents, the claimant alleged that the defendants jointly authored and circulated a petition dated March 19, 2024, accusing him of involvement in the alleged theft of two trinket boxes containing 950 grams of 24-carat gold reportedly belonging to the late Alhaji Tejumola Abolarinwa.
Sule described the allegations as false, malicious and defamatory, insisting that the petition was aimed at damaging his image as a respected businessman and estate developer.
The claimant told the court that he was initially engaged by members of the Abolarinwa family to help recover about 12 plots of land allegedly taken over by hoodlums and land grabbers around the Idimu and Abule-Odu areas of Lagos.
He stated that acting under a Power of Attorney executed in his favour, he committed legal and financial resources toward reclaiming the properties, including engaging lawyers and filing petitions before relevant security agencies.
According to Sule, his efforts led to a favourable court judgment that restored nine plots of land to the family.
He further claimed that, as compensation for his services, he became entitled to two plots of land, while he also separately purchased another plot from the defendants for N2 million.
However, the estate developer alleged that despite the successful execution of the assignment, the defendants later began sponsoring petitions against him at various police formations and government agencies.
The agencies listed in the suit include Idimu Police Station, Area ‘M’ Command, Lagos State Police Command, Zone II Police Command, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the Lagos State anti-land-grabbing office.
Sule alleged that the repeated petitions subjected him to intimidation, humiliation and several police invitations, including a trip to Abuja over allegations that he forged signatures on the Power of Attorney.
The claimant maintained that investigations eventually confirmed the authenticity of the document, yet the defendants allegedly continued to make defamatory statements against him.
He further alleged that the defamatory claims were extended to public broadcasts, including a programme aired on Agidigbo FM in Ibadan.
According to the court filings, the publications portrayed him as a fraudulent businessman, land grabber and dishonest individual, thereby causing serious damage to his reputation, personal integrity and business relationships.
Sule told the court that the publications exposed him to ridicule among associates, clients, family members and the general public, adding that he suffered emotional distress and embarrassment as a result.
Among the reliefs sought, the claimant is asking the court to declare the allegations against him false, malicious and defamatory.
He is also seeking N500 million in damages for the alleged injury to his reputation, emotional trauma and business losses allegedly caused by the publications.
In addition, Sule asked the court to restrain the defendants from further publishing or circulating defamatory statements against him.
As of the time of filing this report, no hearing date had been fixed for the case.
