Viral Video Assault: Lagos Magistrate Sends NURTW Member’s Case to DPP

An Ebute-Metta Magistrate Court in Lagos has ordered that the case file of Shamusideen Oladiti, a 55-year-old member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), be forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

Magistrate Mrs Akinde issued the directive on Tuesday following public outrage over a viral video showing Oladiti allegedly assaulting a man during a violent altercation.

Oladiti is facing a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, unlawful homicide, and grievous assault.

According to police prosecutors, the primary charge stems from an August 27 attack at Lewis Street, Lagos Island, where Oladiti allegedly punched Imam Ramon repeatedly.

Ramon was later confirmed dead at the Lagos Island General Hospital, Marina, from injuries sustained in the assault.

The defendant is also accused of conspiring with others still at large on September 17 and separately attacking another victim, identified as Omale Samuel.

The charges, marked BG/B53/25 and signed by Anthony Iyeye of the Legal and Prosecution Section of the Nigeria Police, Panti, Yaba, were read in court, but Oladiti’s plea was not taken.

The magistrate ordered the case file to be duplicated and forwarded to the DPP within 30 days for appropriate advice.

The matter was thereafter adjourned until October 28, 2025.
