Court Stops Lagos Royal Tussle, Bars Oba Akiolu, IGP from Harassing Oloja-Elect

The Federal High Court in Lagos has issued an injunction restraining security agencies and top traditional figures, including the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwanu Akiolu, from harassing, arresting, or detaining Prince Abiola Olojo Kosoko, the Oloja-Elect of Lagos.

Justice Musa Kakaki granted the order following an application filed by Prince Kosoko’s legal team, led by Chief A.S. Abimbola.

The ruling offers temporary relief to Kosoko, who alleged persistent intimidation since emerging as the Oloja-Elect.

The case, marked FHC/L/CS/0426/2025, names several respondents including the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Zone II, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Adamu Bello Muhammed, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Mariam Ogunmolasuyi, and Inspector Ebere.

The judge stressed that constitutional rights must be protected, especially in sensitive traditional leadership disputes.

“The respondents and their agents are hereby restrained from harassing, attempting to arrest, inviting, detaining, or unlawfully interfering with the applicant’s fundamental rights,” Justice Kakaki ruled.

The dispute centers on the prestigious Oloja of Lagos title, a key position in the city’s royal hierarchy.

Prince Kosoko, a direct descendant of the historic Kosoko royal family, claimed certain factions, allegedly supported by security operatives, are attempting to block his recognition and install another candidate.

The court adjourned the matter to Thursday, September 11, 2025, for the hearing of the motion on notice.
