A Lagos-based entrepreneur, Mrs Oluwapelumi Modupe Alabi, has filed a lawsuit at the Federal High Court in Lagos against the Inspector General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, and several senior police officers, accusing them of weaponising the Nigeria Police Force in a personal marital conflict.
The case, registered as suit number FHC/L/CS/466/2025, details what Oluwapelumi describes as a sustained campaign of harassment instigated by her estranged husband, Mr Muyiwa Alabi, with alleged backing from top-ranking police officials.
According to court filings, the couple was married under Yoruba customary law on October 24, 2024.
However, Oluwapelumi said the relationship deteriorated abruptly after another woman, identified as Tosin, entered the picture.
She claimed Muyiwa stopped all communication, moved in with the new partner, and initiated divorce proceedings at a customary court without prior discussion.
The dispute, however, allegedly escalated beyond the family setting into what Oluwapelumi termed a “misuse of state apparatus.”
She stated in a sworn affidavit that Muyiwa filed criminal complaints against her at multiple police formations, accusing her of stealing a wedding ring and a Toyota SUV, items she insisted were gifts during their marriage.
To support her claims, she provided video evidence and original documents showing that the SUV, with registration number LSR 572 JN and chassis number 5TDDKRFH7FS138293, had been gifted to her before the wedding.
Despite this, she alleged that officers from the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti, led by ACP Shola Omilade and SP Musa Arigu, demanded her presence alongside the SUV and wedding ring on February 13, 2025.
Unable to attend due to being outside the state, Oluwapelumi claimed police operatives stormed her location and forcefully seized the SUV “in commando style,” disregarding her plea for a short extension.
The suit lists several high-ranking police officials among the respondents, including the Assistant Inspector General of Police at Force CID Alagbon, the Commissioner of Police in Lagos, and other officers allegedly involved in the vehicle seizure and subsequent harassment.
Oluwapelumi further alleged that Muyiwa went as far as forging new registration papers for the SUV, dated August 2024, but the police refused to provide her a copy when she requested it.
Matters worsened when she discovered her bank account had been frozen under a Post No Debit (PND) order.
She attributed this to Muyiwa’s alleged influence over police operations.
“As of today, the Police have placed PND on my account on the instruction of Muyiwa. He is acting as if he has the entire Nigeria Police Force in his pocket,” she stated.
Oluwapelumi is now seeking judicial intervention to stop what she calls “a blatant abuse of power” and to restore her rights, properties, and reputation amid what she describes as an “orchestrated intimidation campaign.”
