•This Award Will Help Sustain Our Efforts,’ Says Africa’s Richest Man
Africa’s wealthiest man and President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has been honoured as Leadership Person of the Year at the 17th edition of the Leadership Annual Conference and Awards, held Tuesday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The award, presented by the Leadership Group of Newspapers, recognises Dangote’s unwavering commitment to economic development and national progress.
The prestigious event drew a high-profile audience, including Vice President Kashim Shettima (represented by Dr Aliyu Umar Modibbo), federal ministers, state governors, lawmakers, top business leaders, and influential figures from both the public and private sectors.
Accepting the award on Dangote’s behalf was his Special Adviser, Engr Mansur Ahmed, who delivered a speech emphasising the urgent need for collaboration between government and private enterprise to address Nigeria’s economic challenges.
“On behalf of the award recipients and stakeholders gathered here, I would like to assure all Nigerians of our commitment to continue doing everything possible to collectively make Nigeria a better place for the benefit of the present and future generations,” Dangote said in the statement.
He stressed that in light of global economic turbulence, nations must foster unity between sectors to secure long-term stability and growth.
“Given the apocalyptic developments currently unfolding in the global economic arena, leading stakeholders from all sectors of every economy must close ranks and collaborate to advance the interest of their nation,” he added.
Also, present at the event were members of Dangote Group’s top management, including Fatima Wali Abdurrahman, Senior Special Adviser to the President of the Group; Ibrahim Dikko Adamu, Chief of Staff; Anthony Chiejina, Group Chief Branding and Communication Officer; and several senior executives involved in stakeholder engagement and government relations.
Dangote expressed deep appreciation to the Leadership Newspapers for the honour, noting that the recognition would serve as a source of encouragement to continue his contributions to national and continental development. “This award will help sustain our efforts,” he said.
The theme for this year’s awards, Challenges and Opportunities in Nigeria’s Fiscal Federalism, spotlighted issues surrounding Nigeria’s revenue allocation and development strategy, with keynote speaker Dr Modibbo calling for innovative reforms and inclusive governance.
This latest accolade adds to a long list of national and international recognitions bestowed upon Dangote over the years.
In 2011, he became the first non-public official to receive the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON).
He has also been honoured by the governments of Benin, Congo, Niger, and Senegal for his business acumen and philanthropic efforts.
In 2014, TIME Magazine listed him among the world’s 100 Most Influential People, while Forbes consistently named him Africa’s Most Powerful Man for six years straight.
He was also the Guardian Man of the Year in 2015, Vanguard Personality of the Year in 2022, and a two-time recipient of the Sun Man of the Year award.
