Lagosians Applaud Dangote as National Food Relief Programme Eases Hardship

Rice Distribution Expands Across Local Government Areas

The Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF) continues to receive widespread commendation for its impactful National Food Relief Programme as the distribution of 80,000 bags of 10kg rice reaches more communities in Lagos State.

The initiative, designed to alleviate food insecurity among the vulnerable, has been met with gratitude and enthusiasm from beneficiaries and community leaders alike.

The Lagos launch of the nationwide rice distribution took place on March 18 at the Lagos State Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja, where Dangote was represented by Hajiya Mariya Dangote, an Executive Director of the Dangote Group.

The programme was received by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and other top government officials.

Since the commencement of rice distribution across Lagos’ twenty local government areas, appreciation for Dangote's philanthropic efforts has surged.

Many have hailed the initiative as a critical intervention in addressing food shortages and providing relief to underprivileged Nigerians.

The rice distribution is also complemented by the daily provision of thousands of loaves of bread to needy Lagosians.

To ensure the effective and fair distribution of the relief materials, the Aliko Dangote Foundation partnered with various groups and associations, including People Living with Disabilities, Market Men and Women, Non-Indigenes (Arewa, Ndigbo, South-South), Religious Groups, Artisans, the National Youth Council of Nigeria, the Joint Community Development Association, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), and the Hunters Association, among others.

Mr Olabowale Kasumu, Chairman of Agbado Oke-Odo Local Council Development Authority (LCDA), who supervised the distribution in his jurisdiction, praised the ADF’s Managing Director and CEO, Mrs Zouera Youssoufou, for spearheading such a transformative initiative.

“Aliko Dangote has chosen to be different. Instead of turning a blind eye to the suffering of the vulnerable, he has dedicated resources to alleviating their plight. We deeply appreciate this kind gesture,” Kasumu remarked.

Numerous recipients of the rice donation have expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the much-needed support.

Chidi Ugwuba, a member of the Non-Indigenes Group (Ndigbo), highlighted how the rice donation will significantly ease the burden on her family.

Similarly, Turkson Abigail, Coordinator of People Living with Disabilities in Egbe Idimu LCDA, described the rice as a godsend, particularly during this fasting season.

Elder Yekini Ogunjimi, Chairman of the Ikorodu Local Government Community Development Committee (CDC), emphasized the timeliness of the intervention.

“This rice distribution could not have come at a better time, coinciding with both Ramadan and Lent. Many families will now have food to break their fast and sustain them during this season of devotion,” Ogunjimi, said.

Community leader Niran Ogunbawo echoed similar sentiments, noting that access to food remains a primary challenge for many Nigerians.

“This rice will make a difference in many homes. We thank the Aliko Dangote Foundation for this timely and thoughtful initiative,” he said.

Ms Adeoti, a resident of Odogunyan in Ikorodu North LCDA, expressed her community’s excitement upon hearing about the food relief.

“During this Ramadan period, having this rice will help support families, especially for Iftar meals,” she said.

Chairperson of Ikeja Local Government, Alhaja Adefolani Taibat, described the programme as a lifeline for struggling Lagosians.

“Many are fasting, and others are facing economic hardship.

“This intervention ensures that people have food to eat. We commend Aliko Dangote for his commitment to addressing hunger, and we hope other businesses follow his example.”

Kayode Shokunbi, Chairman of the National Association of Persons with Physical Disabilities (Lagos Chapter), praised Dangote’s unwavering commitment to philanthropy.

“He has always stepped in when help is needed. This initiative is yet another testament to his generosity. We pray for continued blessings upon his businesses and efforts.”

Artisan leader Musa Fatai also extended appreciation on behalf of his colleagues.

“Many hardworking Nigerians are struggling to provide for their families.

“This donation significantly reduces the burden. We urge Dangote to continue his good work, and may Almighty Allah reward his kindness.”

The ongoing rice distribution in Lagos is part of the larger National Food Relief Programme, which aims to distribute over one million bags of 10kg of rice across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas.

The initiative is designed to complement government efforts to address hunger and food insecurity among vulnerable populations nationwide.
