South Korea’s Impeached President Arrested Over Failed Martial Law Attempt

In a historic turn of events, South Korea’s impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol was arrested on Wednesday, after weeks of defiance against authorities.

This marks the first time in the nation's history that a former president has been detained.

Reports reveal that hundreds of officers from the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) surrounded Yoon's residence.

Some scaled walls and used back trails to access the main compound, initiating a five-hour stand-off.

Ultimately, Yoon surrendered, citing his desire to avoid bloodshed.

“I decided to respond to the Corruption Investigation Office to prevent any unfortunate bloodshed,” Yoon said in a pre-recorded video released after his arrest.

He was escorted from his residence in a convoy and taken to the CIO headquarters, where investigators began questioning him.

Yoon, who served as a prosecutor before leading the conservative People Power Party (PPP) to victory in 2022, is accused of attempting to impose martial law.

If convicted of insurrection, he could face the death penalty or life imprisonment.

For weeks, Yoon had resisted arrest by staying within his residence under the protection of loyal Presidential Security Service (PSS) members.
