LAGOS STATE GOVERNOR, BABAJIDE SANWO-OLU |
Several parents of students attending Model Colleges in Lagos State have expressed concerns over the recent increase in boarding fees imposed by the Lagos State Government.
The new fee, set at ₦100,000 per term, marks a significant jump from the previous ₦35,000 and is expected to take effect from the second term of the 2024-2025 academic session.
The hike has sparked widespread frustration among parents, many of whom say they cannot afford the new rate.
While some are pleading for the government to reconsider the increase, others fear it sets a precedent for even higher future increments.
A parent who spoke on the condition of anonymity warned, “If this increase is allowed, the next increment will be even higher. We could be looking at ₦300,000 per term soon.”
Another parent voiced their concerns, saying, “Please pity those of us who cannot afford ₦100,000 per term. This is a heavy burden.”
Parents with multiple children in the colleges find the new fee particularly challenging.
One parent remarked, “₦100,000 is not the issue. During discussions, ₦70,000 was deliberated and left unresolved.
“It’s either they stick to ₦70,000 or reduce it further. Any agreement reached should be documented, signed, and implemented formally.”
A parent shared how the situation has disrupted their child’s academic routine.
“My daughter is still at home, asking daily when she can resume,” the parent lamented.
The discontent among parents led to a scheduled protest initially planned for January 16, 2025.
However, following a meeting on January 14, 2025, between the State Parent Forum executives and key stakeholders, the protest was postponed to a later date.
The affected schools include Lagos State Model Junior College Meiran, Lagos State Model College Igbokuta, Oriwu Model College Ikorodu, and others across the state.
Parents are now urging the government to engage in further dialogue to reach a resolution that balances quality education with affordability.
Meanwhile, many students remain at home, awaiting clarity on when they can return to school under the new fee structure.
This development raises concerns about access to affordable education and the financial burden on families in Lagos State.
