A Supreme Court document dated July 24, 2020, has disclosed that the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, is not recognized as a lawyer by the apex court.
Obasa, a legislator since 2003 and three-term speaker since 2015, was removed from office on Monday.
He was replaced by Mojisola Meranda, the former Deputy Speaker representing Apapa 1 Constituency, who has made history as the first elected female Speaker of the Lagos Assembly.
The verification request on Obasa’s legal status was signed by Gertrude Karenton-Mordi on behalf of the Supreme Court’s Chief Registrar.
The document, titled “Re: Verification of Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa as a Solicitor and Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria,” revealed that Obasa’s name does not appear on the Rolls of Legal Practitioners maintained by the court.
The Supreme Court advised Obasa to provide proof of a name change or present his Call to Bar and qualifying certificates if applicable.
A section of the court's statement read, “We have checked our records and cannot find the name: MUDASHIRU AJAYI OBASA on the numerous Rolls of Legal Practitioners kept in this Honourable Court.”
The court’s spokesman, Dr. Festus Akande, confirmed the document’s authenticity to Arise News, stating that it originated from their office.
Obasa, who had previously claimed to hold a law degree from Lagos State University (LASU), now faces additional scrutiny.
The author of the original verification request to the Supreme Court, submitted on July 23, 2020, remains unidentified.
