Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger to Exit ECOWAS by January 2025

In a significant development, the military-led governments of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have announced plans to withdraw from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) by January 2025.

This decision was revealed on Sunday during the 66th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Commission Authority of Heads of State and Government, held in Abuja, Nigeria.

The resolution, confirmed in a communiqué read by ECOWAS Commission President, Omar Touray, marks a turning point for the regional bloc.

Touray stated that ECOWAS respects the decision of the three nations to sever ties, signalling a growing divide between the bloc and its member states governed by military juntas.
