The Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals complex has been hailed as an extraordinary masterpiece.
This commendation came from a delegation of the Japanese Business Community in Nigeria, led by Ambassador-Designate, Suzuki Hideo, during their visit to the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, Petrochemicals, and Fertiliser complexes in Lekki on Friday, December 13, 2024.
The Dangote Group highlighted its ongoing expansion in the polypropylene sector to reduce Nigeria’s dependency on imports of this vital material used in packaging, textiles, and automotive manufacturing.
The Group also emphasized the global demand for its petroleum products.
During the tour, the delegation marvelled at the state-of-the-art technology on display, with Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) Managing Director, Takashi Oku, praising the refinery as a “remarkable project” that positions Nigeria as a technological leader and the gateway to Africa.
Oku noted that the world’s largest single-train refinery is a source of pride for the nation.
“We had heard about the excellence of the Dangote Refinery through the media, but seeing it in person has left us truly amazed. It demonstrates Nigeria’s remarkable advancements in technology,” Oku said.
Masahiro Tsuno, Managing Director of Itochu Nigeria Limited, echoed similar sentiments, describing the refinery as “a miracle and one of the wonders of the world.”
Comparing it to refineries in Vietnam and the Middle East, Tsuno remarked, “This size of a refinery built by one single investor is probably a miracle in the world. Witnessing it today is nothing short of extraordinary.”
Vice President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries Limited, Devakumar Edwin, stressed the refinery's significance as the vision of Nigerian investor Aliko Dangote.
He argued that it was designed, built, and managed by Nigerians to serve global markets.
Edwin also praised Japan’s technological contributions, noting that Japanese equipment is integral to the refinery and fertiliser facilities.
He expressed optimism for further collaboration, emphasizing Dangote Industries' commitment to embracing cutting-edge innovations.
“We have always sought the latest technology for our projects. From robotic laboratories in our cement plants to advanced equipment in our refinery, Japan’s focus on technological innovation aligns perfectly with our vision,” Edwin said.
According to Edwin, “The Dangote Petrochemical project is expected to boost downstream investments, create jobs, increase tax revenues, reduce foreign exchange outflows, and significantly contribute to Nigeria’s GDP.
He confirmed that products from the refinery, meeting international standards, are already being exported globally.
“In recent weeks, we’ve exported petrol to Cameroon, Ghana, Angola, and South Africa.
“Diesel has reached markets worldwide, while jet fuel is being heavily exported to Europe. Our products are gaining global recognition,” Edwin added.
