Nigerian Banks Unite to Support Jigawa Flood Victims with Multimillion Naira Relief Materials

In a display of solidarity and compassion, the Committee of Banks in Nigeria has donated multimillion-naira worth of relief materials to victims of the recent flooding in Jigawa State.

The delegation, led by Dr Oliver Alawuba, Chairman of the Committee and Group Managing Director/CEO of United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, visited Dutse on Thursday to present the items to the State Government.

The relief package included food items such as bags of rice, cartons of vegetable cooking oil, mattresses, and beverages.

The materials were handed over to Governor Malam Umar A. Namadi to assist displaced residents and critical institutions like public hospitals in their recovery efforts.

In his remarks, Dr Alawuba emphasized the banking sector's commitment to alleviating the suffering of flood victims.

“We stand here in solidarity with the Government and people of Jigawa State. Our donation is aimed at easing the burden of those impacted by this natural disaster,” he said.

Accompanying Dr Alawuba were CEOs from leading Nigerian banks, including Mr Roosevelt Ogbonna of Access Bank Plc, Dame (Dr) Adaora Umeoji of Zenith Bank Plc, and Dr (Mrs) Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe of Fidelity Bank Plc.

They reiterated the sector's dedication to humanitarian causes, highlighting previous interventions during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic and earlier floods.

Governor Namadi expressed profound gratitude for the bankers' visit and support, describing it as an unprecedented act of empathy.

“Your gesture has brought hope to our people in their time of need. Rest assured, the donated materials will be used judiciously to benefit the intended recipients,” he assured.

The Committee of Banks in Nigeria has a long history of supporting communities during crises, showcasing their role as agents of positive change.

Their contribution to Jigawa’s flood recovery underscores the sector's commitment to national development and social welfare.
