President Tinubu Dissolves Nnamdi Azikiwe University Governing Council

Removes Vice Chancellor, Registrar

President Bola Tinubu has approved the dissolution of the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU) in Awka, Anambra State, following allegations of irregularities in the appointment of the university’s Vice-Chancellor.

The action also includes the removal of Professor Bernard Ifeanyi Odoh, the newly appointed Vice Chancellor, and Mrs Rosemary Ifoema Nwokike, the university's registrar.

A statement released on Wednesday by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga confirmed the dissolution, which followed a report that the governing council, led by Ambassador Greg Ozumba Mbadiwe, appointed an unqualified individual to the position of Vice Chancellor without adhering to due process.

The council had come under intense scrutiny for its handling of the appointment, which reportedly ignored established university laws and procedures.

The presidential statement noted that tensions had arisen between the university’s Senate and the governing council of the 33-year-old institution in the wake of the controversial appointment.

The Federal Government intervened, expressing concern over the council’s apparent disregard for the institution’s governing laws and processes, particularly in the selection of a Vice-Chancellor.

The statement further emphasized that the dissolution of the council and the removal of the officials were necessary to ensure proper governance and adherence to legal frameworks at the university.

The President's office reiterated that such actions would be taken seriously to preserve the integrity of the country’s higher education institutions.

In a related development, President Tinubu also approved the removal of Engr. Ohieku Muhammed Salami as the Pro-chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Health Sciences in Otukpo, Benue State.

Salami’s removal was prompted by his unauthorized suspension of the university’s Vice Chancellor, which was conducted in violation of the university's established procedures.

Despite the intervention of the Federal Ministry of Education, which called for the suspension to be reversed, Engineer Salami persisted in his actions and was reported to have engaged in abusive and threatening behaviour toward Ministry officials, including the Permanent Secretary.

The Federal Government underscored that university councils must operate within the legal frameworks prescribed by the universities’ enabling laws.

The Ministry of Education expressed its concerns over the increasing instances of irregularities within university governance and reiterated that such conduct undermines the effective management and academic mission of Nigeria's public universities.

President Tinubu also issued a stern warning to all university councils, urging them not to create distractions within their institutions as the government remains focused on improving the country's education standards and ensuring a conducive academic environment.
