The Port Harcourt Refinery, a major petroleum processing facility in Rivers State, has officially commenced crude oil processing operations.
This development marks a significant milestone in Nigeria's efforts to bolster domestic refining capacity and reduce reliance on imported petroleum products.
The announcement was made by the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Femi Soneye.
While addressing stakeholders, Soneye confirmed that the refinery is now processing crude oil, signalling progress in the federal government’s agenda to revitalize the nation’s downstream oil sector.
The refinery, which has undergone extensive rehabilitation, is one of Nigeria's largest, with a refining capacity of 210,000 barrels per day.
Its revival aligns with the broader mandate of NNPCL to enhance local refining capacity and ensure sustainability in the energy sector.
Details on the production output and the refinery’s integration into the supply chain are expected to emerge in subsequent updates.
The Port Harcourt Refinery is one of several refineries undergoing rehabilitation in the country, as part of a concerted effort by the government to maximize the value chain of Nigeria’s crude oil resources.
