At the recent International Wellness Tree Virtual Summit, hosted by Citisquare Africa, Dr Mories Atoki, Chief Executive Officer of ABC Health, took center stage.
She passionately emphasized the urgent need to prioritize holistic wellness to transform Africa's healthcare landscape, enhance individual well-being, and foster a resilient health system. “We must tackle the multifaceted challenges facing our sector,” she stated in her compelling keynote address.
The summit was more than just an event; it was part of Citisquare Africa's bold vision to champion holistic wellness by offering practical solutions that align financial stability with overall health.
In her presentation titled “Empowering Africa's Growth: Integrating Financial Freedom into Holistic Wellness and Unity,” Dr. Atoki highlighted a critical barrier: the lack of access to vital healthcare information.
She underscored that prioritizing health is essential, as poor health diminishes workforce participation and national productivity.
“The well-being of a nation hinges on the wellness of its people,” Dr. Atoki asserted. Overlooking health as a growth enabler places any nation disadvantaged. She urged industry stakeholders to engage with local communities, promote education and literacy, and ensure access to quality resources—like those provided by Citisquare Africa—while calling for decisive government intervention.
During a spirited panel discussion, Dr. Banji Awosika, Consultant Nephrologist, encouraged proactive health management.
“Don’t wait until you are unwell to visit a doctor,” he advised, advocating for a balanced diet, ample hydration, and vigilance over blood pressure, cholesterol, and sugar levels.
Joining the conversation, Dr. Patrick Ijewere, CEO of The Nutrition Hospital & Wellness Center and creator of the Wellness Tree model, reminded attendees that wellness predates modern medicine. He passionately urged exploration of the five essential roots of holistic well-being:
Spirituality (Finding Purpose, Godliness, or the ‘God Factor’): Engaging in practices that foster a sense of purpose and connection, enhancing resilience and emotional well-being.
Environment (Sustainability): Creating and maintaining spaces that support health, emphasizing a commitment to sustainability for the benefit of both people and the planet.
Mindset (Mental Well-being): Cultivating a positive, growth-oriented attitude, which plays a crucial role in motivation and emotional health.
Nutrition (Healthy Eating): Emphasizing the importance of a balanced diet rich in whole foods to fuel the body and mind.
Lifestyle (Alignment with Nature): Adopting daily habits and practices that promote activity, rest, and a harmonious relationship with the natural environment.
“Adopt these principles, and you will shed the shadows of ill health,” he promised.
Sandro Bilobrk, founder and lead coach of FromCoach, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing personal responsibility for health and the importance of understanding one’s body. “How we treat ourselves matters,” he affirmed.
Addressing mental health, Dr. Maymunah Yusuf Kadiri, Medical Director at Pinnacle Medical Services, stressed the importance of vigilance regarding one’s health status. “Health is wealth. If you are healthy, you can pursue your goals; if not, it becomes a challenge,” she warned. She also highlighted the power of workplace initiatives to boost employee productivity as a vital aspect of corporate responsibility.
Personal growth expert Dr Tracy Lynn West, founder of Stay Positive, underscored the need for balance in corporate environments.
“A leader's primary role is to develop other leaders. Checking in on your team’s well-being is a small but impactful start,” she advised.
As the summit drew to a close, the call to join Citisquare Africa’s thriving community was loud and clear. Dr Uche Nnama, the summit's convener and founder of Citisquare Africa, encouraged attendees to engage with the organization’s comprehensive strategies designed to facilitate holistic wellness and financial freedom.
“Our community thrives together,” he concluded. “Wellness is indeed a journey.”
