Grid Collapse: Power Minister Orders Immediate Implementation of Committee’s Report to Prevent Further Failures

In a decisive move to tackle recurring power outages in Nigeria, the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has directed the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and other related agencies within the ministry to urgently implement the recommendations of an inter-agency committee report.

The committee, established to address persistent grid collapses, submitted its findings on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, and within a day, the Minister issued a mandate to commence actions aimed at strengthening the stability of Nigeria’s power grid.

The prompt response from Chief Adelabu follows the latest national grid disturbance, reported by TCN at approximately 11:29 am on Thursday, November 7.

The disruption was attributed to a rapid rise in frequency from 50.33Hz to 51.44Hz, causing unexpected power instability across multiple regions.

TCN has since urged Nigerians to remain patient and understanding as work on grid repairs may lead to occasional power disruptions.

Bolaji Tunji, Special Adviser to the Minister on Strategic Communications and Media, stated that the Minister expects all relevant agencies to “brace up for the immediate implementation” of the report’s recommendations.

Although specific recommendations from the committee have not been disclosed, the swift directive signals the government’s commitment to addressing Nigeria’s long-standing power issues.

The recent grid failure highlights a chronic challenge in Nigeria’s power sector, where erratic supply and system collapses have been a significant concern for decades.
