Edo 2024: Reflecting on Primate Ayodele’s Advice to Ex-Governor Godwin Obaseki One Year Ago

By Esohe Osazu

As the newly elected governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okphebolo was sworn in yesterday, I couldn’t help but reflect on how former governor Godwin Obaseki might have been the happiest man today had he heeded the counsel of Nigerian prophet, Primate Elijah Ayodele, given in September 2023.

Primate Ayodele may be controversial, blunt in his approach, and have his fair share of critics, but one thing stands out—his prophecies consistently come to pass as predicted.

You don’t need to be his friend or even know him personally before your name features in his prophecies.

This is a reality much fail to understand. When his words favour someone, they claim he seeks attention.

When they don’t, they accuse him of being paid by their opposition—a telling sign of ignorance.

Humans, especially Christians, need to understand that their pastor isn’t the only vessel God uses to communicate.

You cannot dictate who God sends to you or limit His methods. God does as He pleases.

Primate Ayodele is a man of “garment,” while Obaseki is a Pentecostal Christian.

If doctrinal differences were the reason Obaseki dismissed the prophet’s advice, it was a costly mistake.

However, that’s now water under the bridge—the former governor has already faced public embarrassment.

On September 21, 2023, Primate Ayodele, through a statement released by his media aide Osho Oluwatosin, warned Obaseki to tread carefully in his feud with his then-deputy, Philip Shaibu.

He urged Obaseki to sheath his sword, emphasizing that the conflict could lead to the People's Democratic Party (PDP) losing the governorship election.

He advised diplomacy over hostility, urging Obaseki to focus on securing victory rather than escalating disputes with Shaibu.

His warning was clear: “Obaseki should sheath his sword. Fighting his deputy will make him fail. He should be more diplomatic about this matter.

“I warned you three years ago that you and your deputy would clash, and it would lead to your political weakness.

“Fighting him will make PDP lose. If there are issues, come together and sort them out.

“Don’t wash your dirty linen in public. This fight will not give you victory; it will make you lose. Stop fighting.”

Primate Ayodele further cautioned that the feud was taking on a spiritual dimension and would damage PDP’s chances in the election if unresolved.

Speaking like a father to a son, he urged Obaseki to reflect on his beginnings, warning him against listening to sycophants who would only exacerbate the situation.

He said: “The fight is becoming more spiritual, and it may affect PDP’s chances in the coming election.

“The party can lose in Edo if this fight continues. Instead of putting your house to ensure victory, you are fighting. Stop this fight. There’s more to do than fighting.

“It’s a small world; look at the beginning. Don’t let this feud make you lose the state.

“Don’t think your people love you. Those clapping for you will be the ones to create problems for you.”

Primate Ayodele repeatedly warned Obaseki, even advising him not to impose a candidate on the party.

However, this particular heartfelt counsel stands out, making me wonder about the opportunities Obaseki missed by ignoring a simple instruction: “Don’t fight with your deputy; focus on winning.”

It was straightforward advice, but pride, it seems, got the better of the former governor.
