LAGOS, NIGERIA – The Dangote Group, a leader in various sectors across Africa, was the star of the show at the Nigeria Employers Consultative Association (NECA) 2024 Annual Night of Recognitions held in Lagos over the weekend.
The conglomerate, along with its subsidiaries Dangote Cement Plc and Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals, won several prestigious awards, highlighting their contributions to business resilience and national development.
During the event, the Dangote Group was awarded the Visible Impact Award for Resilience & Entrepreneurship.
Notably, Dangote Cement clinched the Sectoral Excellence Award in the Chemical and Non-Metallic Products category, while Dangote Refinery, recognized for its impressive scale, received the Groundbreaking Investment Award, distinguishing itself as the world's largest single-train refinery with a production capacity of 650,000 barrels per day.
Receiving the accolades on behalf of the conglomerate, Mr Devakumar Edwin, Vice-President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries, expressed the company's gratitude for the recognition.
He stated that these awards reflect the company's commitment to being a top employer and demonstrate its resilience amidst challenging economic conditions.
"These awards will further motivate us to pursue global best practices and continue investing in the rejuvenation of Nigeria’s economy,” Edwin conveyed.
The evening also honoured key figures in government, with the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investments, Dr Jumoke Oduwole, and the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo (SAN), both receiving the “Visible Impact in Public Service Award.”
This year's awards theme, “Defying the Odds,” encapsulated the spirit of resilience within Nigeria's business environment.
Dr Ifeanyi Eric Okoye, President of NECA, remarked that the event was designed to acknowledge the excellence and innovation demonstrated by Nigerian businesses during a tumultuous economic year.
“This annual ceremony encapsulates progress made by organizations committed to national development through best practices in corporate governance, industrial relations, and environmental sustainability.
“Our honours serve as a beacon of hope and recognition of the ability to achieve excellence in adversity,” he stated.
NECA's Director General, Mr Adewale-Smatt Oyerinde, further emphasized the significance of celebrating resilience among employers, encouraging them to focus on longstanding issues tackling environmental, social, and governance concerns.
He underscored the importance of responsible business conduct among private-sector employers.
In a show of support for the private sector, Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Head of Service, Mr Shuaheeb Agoro, praised NECA's dedication to nurturing enterprise and competitiveness.
He affirmed that the theme of resilience was indicative of the unwavering entrepreneurial spirit prevalent in Nigeria, stating, “This resilience reflects the determination of Nigerian employers as they navigate challenges to sustain businesses and drive national development.”
The event not only recognized the achievements of the award recipients but also inspired all businesses to foster innovation, inclusivity, and resilience.
