Court of Appeal Acquits Former CJN Onnoghen of False Assets Declaration Conviction, Orders Return of Forfeited Accounts

The Court of Appeal, Abuja, has discharged and acquitted former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, overturning his earlier conviction for false asset declaration by the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).

The appellate court's ruling effectively clears Onnoghen of all charges that led to his controversial trial and subsequent conviction in 2019.

Presiding Justice Abba Mohammed delivered the judgment, confirming that all issues resulting in Onnoghen’s conviction had been resolved through terms of the settlement reached between the former CJN and the federal government.

These terms were adopted by the court, signalling an end to the prolonged legal battle that ensued after Onnoghen’s suspension and removal from office over allegations of failing to declare assets as required by law.

As part of the judgment, Justice Mohammed ordered that the four bank accounts of the former CJN, which were previously forfeited due to the conviction, be returned to him.

The accounts, which were central to the case against Onnoghen, contained funds allegedly undeclared in his asset filings, a matter which sparked widespread debate and drew sharp criticisms about the perceived politicization of judicial proceedings in Nigeria.
