To restore public confidence in Nigeria’s judiciary, Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi SAN, will lead a group of distinguished legal and media professionals at the 2024 Gavel International Annual Conference on November 29, 2024.
This year’s theme, “The Judiciary as the Last Hope of the Common Man: Media and Legal Perspectives,” will highlight the judiciary’s vital role and discuss strategies for addressing public concerns regarding transparency and integrity in the legal system.
The conference will feature Fagbemi delivering the keynote address, with Mr Gbenga Oyebode, the founder of the prestigious Aluko & Oyebode law firm, presiding as chairman.
Known for his commitment to education and justice reform, Oyebode also chairs Nestlé Nigeria Plc and Lafarge Africa and serves on various influential boards, including Carnegie Hall and the Rele Arts Foundation.
Renowned legal expert, Dele Adesina, SAN, will present the main lecture, bringing over 40 years of legal experience to the forum.
Adesina, an alumnus of the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), has contributed significantly to Nigerian legal scholarship through his books, The Force of Justice and New Developments in Law and Practice in Nigeria.
According to Mustapha Ogunsakin, Publisher of Gavel International, the event aims to address the decline in public trust in the judiciary, which he attributes to both systemic issues and recent attacks on judicial symbols, such as the burning of the Lagos High Court during the #EndSARS protests.
“We must restore hope in the judiciary, especially as it serves as the last line of defence for the common man. The alternative is anarchy,” Ogunsakin noted.
The conference will include insights from an esteemed panel of legal, academic, and media figures.
Prof. Hope Eghagha, a University of Lagos scholar, will discuss public perceptions of the judiciary, while journalist and judicial reporting expert Richard Akinnola, criminal law expert Mrs Tomi Ajayi, and human rights advocate Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, SAN, will also contribute to the dialogue.
Gavel International’s annual conference reflects its ongoing commitment to advancing the rule of law in Nigeria.
This year’s event builds on a legacy of high-profile gatherings, including a 2015 conference attended by then-Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, and a 2020 webinar on media coverage of virtual court proceedings amid the COVID-19 pandemic, featuring prominent speakers such as Femi Falana, SAN, and Dr Reuben Abati.
With the judiciary facing an unprecedented crisis of confidence, Gavel International aims to foster actionable discussions to rebuild trust in this critical institution.
