Kindiki, Nominated as Kenya’s Deputy President Following Senate Impeachment Vote

Kenyan President William Ruto has nominated Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki as the new Deputy President following the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua.

The nomination comes after the Kenyan Senate voted on Thursday to remove Gachagua from office. The 59-year-old former Deputy President was impeached after a two-day hearing, with the Senate supporting five out of the 11 charges against him.

Amid calls for a swift replacement, President Ruto selected Kindiki, a 52-year-old academic and prominent political figure, as his nominee for the role. The nomination now awaits Senate approval.

Moses Wetangula, Speaker of the National Assembly, announced Ruto’s decision, urging lawmakers to proceed with the vote to confirm Kindiki's appointment as the new Deputy President. Kindiki had been considered a leading contender for the position by Kenyan media before the nomination.
