Nigerian crossdresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, may face new criminal charges following allegations that he bribed officials to serve a jail term in a private apartment and influenced the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to drop money laundering charges.
The controversy intensified after activist VeryDarkMan shared an audio recording in which Bobrisky allegedly claimed he paid N15 million to EFCC officials to dismiss a money laundering case.
Bobrisky also purportedly admitted to bribing officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) with help from a “Godfather” and NCoS Controller General, Haliru Nababa, allowing him to serve a six-month sentence outside prison.
Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo ordered an investigation, and while an initial report concluded, there was no evidence Bobrisky left Kirikiri Custodial Centre, a newly obtained report from the probe panel recommends defamation and criminal charges.
The report alleges Bobrisky’s claims tarnish the correctional service’s image and has urged the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate possible bribes made to EFCC and NCoS officials.
The panel report specifies that if bribery is proven, Bobrisky should face charges under Nigeria's Corrupt Practices Act.
Additionally, the panel indicted three correctional officers for failing to properly document Bobrisky’s transfers within the prison system and recommended disciplinary actions.
The investigation also highlighted the need for reform within the correctional system, recommending an audit of custodial records and sustainable partnerships with civil society to improve inmate oversight and welfare.
