IGP Usman Baba, Jailed Three Months

Justice Bolaji Olajuwon of an Abuja Federal High Court on Tuesday sent the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, to three months imprisonment for flouting a 2011 court order.

The court's decision came sequel to a legal action instituted by a police officer, Patrick Okoli, who was unlawfully and compulsorily retired from the Nigerian Police Force (NPF).

Justice Olajuwon equally directed the payment of N10 million to the applicant, being special and general damages for the unlawful, illegal, and unconstitutional denial of his (Patrick’s) rights and privileges as a Senior Officer of the Nigeria Police Force from 1993 until date.

In a contempt proceeding filed by Okoli’s lawyer, Arinze Egbo, Justice Olajuwon in a ruling warned IGP Baba against non-compliance with the earlier court judgment.

Justice Olajuwon issued a warning that if the IGP failed to purge himself of the contempt, he shall be liable to another three months jail-term.

It would be recalled that Okoli had in a suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/637/2009 sued the police boss as a sole respondent in the matter.
