'Governance In Nigeria Should Be For Human Development' — Group

(Being Text of A Statement by CFTG FCT Chapter 02/09/2022)

The Campaign for Transformative Governance (CFTG) is an initiative of Labour and Pro Labour Civil Society Organisations; including the Trade Union Congress, AUPCTRE, FIWON and Civil Society Organisations that are pro-Labour. The purpose of the Campaign is to work toward ensuring that governance in Nigeria is for Human Development. The Campaign is supported by the Solidarity Center.

The thematic areas for the Campaign are; (1) ensuring accessible and effective public service delivery; (2) Enabling political education of citizens for transformative governance, and (3) promoting and enhancing human security as a panacea to the endemic insecurity in the country and the ravaging poverty, and devastating conditions of the people.

In light of the above, Solidarity Center was able to secure a grant from National Endowment for Democracy (NED) for promoting Trade Union and CSO Collaboration in protecting democratic civic space in fragile democracies. The States in the first phase of the project include; FCT, Lagos and Rivers.

The project has commenced with Town Hall meetings. The purpose of the Town Hall meetings is to afford stakeholders (Labour and Community Leaders) the opportunity to engage with political parties, candidates of political parties and public office holders.

The FCT Chapter of CFTG is organizing Three (3) Town Hall meetings like her counterparts in Rivers and Lagos State for AMAC/Bwari; Kuje/Gwagwalada and Abaji/Kwali. The Town Hall meetings have been organised in AMAC/Bwari and Kuje/Gwagwalada Area Councils and the final one would be held in Kwali/Abaji on the 10th of September 2022.

The FCT Chapter of CFTG reached out to candidates of political parties, political parties, Area Council Chairs and Councilors.

A charter of engagement has been developed by the FCT Chapter; the major issues in the charter of engagement include Education, Healthcare and Public Service Delivery. It is expected that at the end of the Town Hall meetings, with the input of the people, the final copy of the charter of engagement would be ready.

The First Town Hall meeting took place in AMAC/Bwari; Olaitan Oyerinde Auditorium, Labour House, Central Business District on Saturday, the 13th of August 2022. The meeting had a cross-section of Stakeholders in attendance; Labour leaders, Community leaders, the candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) and party Officials from YPP and PRP. The draft charter of engagement was presented and Stakeholders, and participants engaged the candidate of the YPP and party officials present on issues around the state of our public-funded primary and secondary schools, public-funded healthcare facilities, infrastructure, and insecurity among other related issues.

The candidate of YPP pledged to prioritise the welfare of his constituents if elected into office. At the end of the Town Hall meetings, structures were constituted for AMAC and Bwari Area Council.

The second Town Hall took place in Kuje/Gwagwalada in the NUT Secretariat in Gwagwalada on the 27th of August 2022. The meeting had stakeholders from Labour and the Communities in Kuje and Gwagwalada in attendance. The candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for FCT South and the Representative of the candidate of Labour Party (LP) for FCT South were in attendance.

Party officials from SDP, AAC and APC were in attendance. The charter of engagement was presented and stakeholders raised issues bothering on Insecurity, Education, healthcare, vote buying etc. The candidate of the Labour Party and SDP made commitments to work for the people and responded to questions raised by stakeholders. The structures for Kuje and Gwagwalada were set up.

The final Town Hall meeting comes up on the 10th of September 2022. Candidates of political parties for FCT Senate, candidates for FCT South Federal Constituency, Area Council Chairs of Abaji & Kwali and Councilors in these Area Council political parties.

Once the charter of engagement has been finalised at the end of the third Town Hall meeting; the charter will become the basis of continued engagement with political parties and political candidates in the course of the general campaigns towards the 2023 general elections; and as well also, for continuous engagements with political office holders throughout their tenure in office.

Each of the three (3) States in the pilot phase, would convene 3 Town Hall meetings (One across each Senatorial District for Lagos and Rivers States); develop and finalise the respective charter of engagements, and utilise the same for ongoing and continuous engagements towards ensuring that popular pressure is put on politicians, political office holders, and political parties to deliver Transformative Governance.
