Dangote Cement CEO Pushes for Net-Zero Cement in Africa at Global Summit in Madrid

The Group Managing Director of Dangote Cement Plc, Arvind Pathak, says Africa can lead the next wave of sustainable industrial growth by cutting carbon emissions while scaling up cement production to meet massive infrastructure demand.

Pathak made the remarks after joining top global executives at the 2026 Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) CEO Strategic Dialogue in Madrid, Spain.

The two-day summit brought together cement and concrete industry leaders to map strategies for achieving net-zero emissions and advancing sustainable growth across the value chain.

A key focus of the talks was balancing decarbonisation with growth in developing economies. “With Africa's infrastructure demand continuing to rise, the sector must pursue growth while embracing innovative pathways to reduce carbon emissions,” Pathak said.

Executives at the forum addressed low-carbon construction, climate policy, financing for decarbonisation, and the technologies needed to speed up the net-zero transition.

Pathak stressed that Africa’s cement sector must accelerate its decarbonisation through alternative fuels, lower clinker content in cement, and investment in innovative technologies tailored to local conditions.

Dangote Cement pledged to cut its carbon emissions intensity by 20% by 2030 from a 2021 baseline. Its strategy includes substituting fossil fuels with cleaner alternatives, boosting thermal and electrical efficiency, investing in renewable energy, and clinker optimisation.

Pathak noted that achieving decarbonisation requires stronger collaboration across the value chain, including governments, technology providers, financiers, and customers, alongside supply chain optimisation and operational resilience.

The GCCA meeting also reviewed the industry’s role in global climate action, including engagement at COP30 and initiatives like the Cement Breakthrough.

Participants underscored innovation and partnerships as critical to meeting both net-zero targets and global infrastructure needs.

As a founding GCCA member, Dangote Cement continues to shape industry sustainability initiatives. Pathak, who serves on the GCCA Board, said the company’s participation reflects its commitment to global best practices and leadership in low-carbon cement production across Africa.

The summit drew CEOs from Holcim, CEMEX, Ultratech Cement, and the Thai Cement Manufacturers Association, among others.
